Velocity 2X Review

Velocity 2X is the sequel to the award winning Velocity, and features fast paced gameplay and a teleport mechanic. The heroine Kai Tana blasts, tele-dashes and jumps through interior sections then returns to her Quarp Jet to continue her fight against the Vokh.

Sequels usually get a bad rap. Either they’re rushed or lack the vision that put the first game on the map. Thankfully, this isn’t the case with Velocity 2X. Can it live up to the hype of being the self proclaimed “Game of The Year”? I think so. Velocity 2X arrives on the PS4 in beautiful 108op and 60 frames per second locked. It’s almost a requirement that this game have a steady framerate to provide the buttery smooth gameplay that veterans of the Velocity series know and love. Players who have poured dozens of hours into Velocity Ultra on the PS Vita need not to worry, the game plays wonderfully on the PS4. It may take a few levels to get used to the controller, but the gameplay transfers perfectly and it seems like the series was made for the console.

Velocity 2X takes the classic shoot em up top down shooter and gives it a kick with brilliant side scrolling platforming. What I love about the game is that it eases the player into new gameplay elements during the first few of 50 stages (plus hidden bonus stages). Speed and collection is the name of the game here. Not only are you timed, but you have survivors to rescue. Granted, you have 20 minutes to complete a level but that’s not the point. Being fast and precise is the way to go. Not only are you competing to beat the game, you are also competing against the world with leaderboards which adds tons of replay value to the game.

The levels are short which makes quick gaming a breeze. You can tell by the level design that the PS Vita was the lead platform due to the length of the levels and portability. But make no mistake, it transfers remarkably well to the PS4. You can fire up, play a few levels while your significant other gets ready for dinner and not miss a beat. It’s perfect for short, burst gaming.

The controls are tight and extremely responsive. Not once did I think that it should have stayed on the Vita due to sloppy controls. It plays just as well on the DualShock 4 as it does on the handheld. Your reflexes and timing will get a kick in the pants as you try to aim for perfect scores on each of the levels. In addition, the platforming feels solid and keeps with the quality of the shooter portion of the game. Never did I feel like one part of the game was better than the other, but rather, it flows perfectly well together. With other games, extra modes can feel tacked on, but that is not the case with Velocity 2X in regards the platforming section. And there is no doubt that fans of the series will definitely enjoy it.

The beauty of Velocity 2X is that it’s as difficult as you want it to be. If you want to go through a Sunday drive and take your time playing and admiring the sights, you can do that. Or if you want blaze through the levels as fast as you can, getting 100% on all 50 stages, you can do that too. It gives the player ultimate control on how the game should be played and I love it.

Velocity 2X looks and plays like a Game Of The Year candidate. In a sea of big budget AAA titles, it feels like it belongs with the likes of Destiny and Dragon Age because it’s a fun, beautiful game that never ceases to amaze gamers regardless if they don’t prefer top down shooters. Throw your money at this game, it deserves every single dime of it.
