Zombie Defense Review

The recent crop of Wii U indie games has given the Wii U eShop a steady stream of quality even to the point of leaving the 3DS eShop behind, and that is saying something. Some have been well hyped and promoted and some of them have been out the blue, Zombie defence is the latter for sure. Nintendo has been preening a good relationship with independent game companies with that and their gaming legacy the Wii U is a great platform for these games to be a part of. However does Zombie Defence add something that is different and good to the populous?

Zombie Defense is a real-time strategy tower defence game which offers something quite different to what we’ve seen before on the Wii U eShop, which is a great thing in itself. Sure the zombie theme is supposed to be one of the most played out in gaming at the moment, but for me it is actually fine, I love Zombies.

You are humanity’s last hope from an endless horde of zombies rampaging across the burning corpse of our dying civilization. Use strategies and tactics to decimate waves of shambling walkers, creeping monstrosities and massive mutant zombie bosses. Rally desperate soldiers, outfit them with lethal weaponry and march to victory. This sounds simple but of course it isn’t, as you progress through the levels, you get more and more zombies often in waves which can be overwhelming.

You collect money for every zombie killed and you get bonuses for completing levels. With this money you get a huge choice of upgrades, in fact every weapon of the modern military arsenal is at your disposal, the choice is really dazzling. You can in theory build your defence team out of marines that can call in air strikes, or huntsmen with extra dynamite to blow up the zombie masses.

You don’t actually control the soldiers; you just place them and let them look after themselves, but at the same time they are in constant danger, if they are not equipped well enough they can become overwhelmed and die, which in turn leaves everyone else at risk too, so tactics are vital. It’s not just about increasing the number of troops, it’s about getting them in sync, working to their strengths and the enemies weaknesses. It is quite compulsive, once you get hooked there is so much content that you will be playing for the long haul, even then you may not unlock it all at all! Will you and your desperate army of survivors prevail?

The graphics and sound are akin to a mobile game, which ironically it was before and you may as well be playing strictly on the GamePad screen, without the use of a television display at all. Overall, you are getting a good alternative game for the Wii U, which I would highly recommend. Some may be put off by the Zombie theme but I for one am glad I have put in the time and think Zombie Defense is a solid buy!
