Resette’s Prescription ~Book of memory, Swaying scale~ Review

Resette's Prescription ~Book of memory, Swaying scale~ Review Screenshot 1

Resette’s Prescription ~Book of memory, Swaying scale~ is a 2D point-and-click adventure game available on Steam for Windows-Based PCs. Achille is an unconscious young boy suffering from ‘sleeping sickness’. The disease has him locked in a comatose state due to a deeply-rooted subconscious trauma and fear. It is up to Resette and her cat assistant Gaede to travel into his mind to get to the bottom of it. They must find out what is bothering him and how to wake up him. You will guide Resette and Gaede through Achille’s memories in order to help Achille face his trauma and fears.

As you move from one memory to the next you will face various puzzles and obstacles along the way. The puzzles in Resette’s Prescription vary. The difficulty of each puzzle also varies. Some are easy to figure out while others can be a real challenge to figure out. While this point-and-click game did focus more on the story than the puzzles they were still necessary to advance the story. One of Achille’s memories took place in a courthouse. Each room in the courthouse had a different puzzle to figure out. After you completed each puzzle you obtained an item that helped you to figure out why that memory took place at the courthouse.

Without the puzzles, the game just would have felt like a visual novel. Although the puzzles were important to advance the story they were still boring. Even the more difficult puzzles were dull. They weren’t interesting in any way. The sound in this game is limited. There are no character voices, you can barely hear the sound effects and the background music is dull. Resette is easy to control. You don’t use the keyboard to control her but your mouse. If your cursor turns into a pair of shoes that means Resette can walk there. If you can interact with an object your cursor will also turn into a quill. You can also combine items that you find. Actually to pass certain parts of the game combining items is a must.

The best aspect of Resette’s Prescription ~Book of memory, Swaying scale~ are the visuals. The game contains a variety of visual styles. The characters themselves are drawn in a cute chibi style that you would find in anime. The backgrounds look like a series of watercolor paintings. When you first start the game you get a beautiful, hand-drawn opening scene with a theme song. The opening theme song is just beautiful. The opening animated scene helps to give Resette’s Prescription a unique Japanese style. I would have liked to have seen more animated scenes throughout the game. Unfortunately, we don’t get any. This game could easily be turned into a anime movie. My only complaint is the lack of variety when it comes to visiting new places in the game.

The entire game takes place at the mansion and courthouse. It would have been nice to see more beautiful or interesting places. The main motivation for finishing the game is to find out how the story ends and what has Achille so troubled. That being said the storyline deals with serious issues such as death, injustice, and abuse. The ending didn’t quite make sense to me. Without giving too much away the majority of the injustice suffered by people in the game comes from the courthouse. Yet at the end of the game, we never find out if that gets taken care of or not. The ending raised more questions for me than answered. It also wasn’t a satisfying ending. It felt like there were a lot of loose ends.

Another thing that doesn’t get said is where Resette gets her power to get inside minds comes from. Resette’s Prescription ~Book of memory, Swaying scale~ has potential to become a series of games based on Resette’s life and cases she takes on. Even though I didn’t exactly like Achille’s story I would like to see more of Resette. For being 12 years old Resette had maturity beyond her years and was very clever. She is a very interesting heroine. Even though the subject matter was serious Resette and Gaede still managed to bring some moments of humor here and there. Resette and Gaede don’t exactly get along but their dialogue is entertaining. There are no game modes and the replayability is on the low side. It’s an adventure game that focuses on the story. Once you find out Achille’s story there is no point in replaying the game again. There is no point system either.

Resette’s Prescription isn’t for everyone for a few reasons. One reason is that the story deals with some serious issues that might not be suited for people of all ages. Another reason is that it is a point-and-click adventure game. Once you get to the mansion in the game there is a glitch that you can only get around by pressing the skip button in the settings. Resette’s Prescription~Book of Memory, Swaying scale~ isn’t a perfect game but it does have some things going for it. The graphics are beautiful and has a unique Japanese style, the game doesn’t take long to complete, and has an interesting main heroine. Her ability to travel into minds is unique. I haven’t seen that in a game since Psychonauts. I would recommend this game to anyone who likes visual novels, point-and-click games, and manga.
