Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim to use an all-new engine

After initial concerns that Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim would be built using the decidedly long in the tooth Gamebryo engine, Nick Breckon, the community manager at Beathesda has now confirmed via Twitter that it is being built using an all-new engine, one that according to Nick, “looks fantastic”.

While still capable of the occasional moment of beauty, Gamebryo’s use for the development of New Vegas felt like a stretch too far for the engine which was almost unbelievably used for the development of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind almost 10 years ago.

Although some very clever programming and tinkering has got the engine through the majority of this generation, the poor animations and relatively low level of detail that the engine can produce are starting to show the engines age.

It may have been a great engine in its day but I for one will be happy to see the back of it – an all new Elder Scrolls release deserves to be technically advanced rather than dated.
