The best year for videogames ever? How about 2010?

With all the customary football chat well and truly mined, I and a few of my friends got onto one of those all time classic drunken conversational threads – what’s the best game of all time? Although fairly inebriated, it seemed a concerted effort was being made to get to the bottom of this little conundrum and although (rather inevitably) a final decision was not made, I did notice just how many recent games came into consideration……or more specifically; games released in 2010.

That got me thinking – could 2010 have been the best year of all time for videogames? There’s no doubt that some of my favourite games were released that year – Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2. Any year that produces three games of that quality surely has to be taken into consideration. Then there’s Halo: Reach, God of War 3, Alan Wake (I don’t care what you say, it’s fantastic) and Black Ops to take into account. That’s not even mentioning the fantastic array of marmite games released that year – Final Fantasy XIII (I thought it was great), Vanquish, Blur. The list goes on.

Yep, 2010 was pretty special year. But was it the best?  1997 game us GoldenEye, Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night while 1998 gave us Ocarina of Time, Half Life and Metal Gear Solid. Decisions, decisions. I’m sticking with 2010……..for now. I am however open to a strong argument.

What do you think was the greatest year in videogame history?

Amswers on a postcard.

Fickle, very fickle. Yes, Super Mario Galaxy 2 is EASILY one of my favorite games this gen but it did nothing Super Mario Galaxy hadn’t already barring the inclusion of Yoshi. Red Dead Redemption like GTAIV starts off great but 1-2 hours in the mission become repetitive and a chore, even the lust exterior cant disguise such. Mass Effect 2 least for me suffered the same flaws as Red Dead Redemption, them being a beautiful exterior cant ever hide basic chore-some gameplay.

1997 still in my mind ranks best year in videogames (probably).

  • Wow……that’s one harsh critic. I can see where you’re coming from but Galaxy 2 was a near perfect game (innovation isn’t necesarry for greatness) and I’d take Red dead over any GTA game released. Maybe because I’m a fan of westerns but that sandbox style gameplay suits the era so well and the dialogue and writing throughout are fantastic.

As for ME2, I actually had the opposite problem. I was quite bored for a few hours but once the game got hold, it never let go. Still, differing opinions are the point of a debate……..although I’m certainly not arguing the quality of 1997. great year for videogames!
