With all the customary football chat well and truly mined, I and a few of my friends got onto one of those all time classic drunken conversational threads – what’s the best game of all time? Although fairly inebriated, it seemed a concerted effort was being made to get to the bottom of this little conundrum and although (rather inevitably) a final decision was not made, I did notice just how many recent games came into consideration……or more specifically; games released in 2010.
That got me thinking – could 2010 have been the best year of all time for videogames? There’s no doubt that some of my favourite games were released that year – Mass Effect 2, Red Dead Redemption, Super Mario Galaxy 2. Any year that produces three games of that quality surely has to be taken into consideration. Then there’s Halo: Reach, God of War 3, Alan Wake (I don’t care what you say, it’s fantastic) and Black Ops to take into account. That’s not even mentioning the fantastic array of marmite games released that year – Final Fantasy XIII (I thought it was great), Vanquish, Blur. The list goes on.
Yep, 2010 was pretty special year. But was it the best? 1997 game us GoldenEye, Final Fantasy VII and Castlevania: Symphony of the Night while 1998 gave us Ocarina of Time, Half Life and Metal Gear Solid. Decisions, decisions. I’m sticking with 2010……..for now. I am however open to a strong argument.
What do you think was the greatest year in videogame history?
