Gears of War 3 is just four days away from setting the gaming world on fire. It’s been three years since the last installment, and that sequel, and the series as a whole now has a huge fanbase. If you were to pop onto Gears of War 2 for a multiplayer match right now, you’d be surprised at the amount of people still playing it religiously. You wouldn’t get that with any other three year old games, except for perhaps Halo.
The third installment will most definitely be bigger, louder, longer and more brutal. Epic Games have not only cranked up the intensity and gore levels, but they’ve worked incredibly hard on the gameplay and story side of things too. One thing is for sure, Gears of War 3 is going to be one hell of a roller coaster ride, and I can’t wait.
The game will begin with Marcus Fenix, everyone’s favourite blood-stained, deep-voiced hero, on-board a colossal aircraft carrier serving at the Delta Squad’s base. It’s named the Raven’s Nest, groovy. As you can probably guess, everything’s all hunky-dory on board, until they’re invaded by a huge horde of Locusts, and as you might guess, it’s a bloodbath. That opening gives you a pretty definitive idea of the game’s content. The blood spilling just continues from their, with those crafty devils at Epic Games knowing exactly what we want from a GoW game.
The game will also focus more of the characters’ back-stories, with Excecutive Producer Rod Fergusson confirming that the game will explore Marcus’ relationship with his father, and see Cole and Sam returning to their hometowns. There are set to be a lot of these beats that show different perspectives and deeper aspects of these characters.
As rumoured, Gears of War 3, although still a third person shooter, will contain RPG elements. Nobody’s quite sure what yet but they’re in there, and I bet you they’re damn good.
The surroundings in Gears of War 3 will also be more interactive than in the previous two games, meaning you can use the environment to massacre your opponents, severing a locust with a manky, steel door perhaps, or, giving ’em a good ol’ knock on the head with a street lamp. Sweet.
The evil race, the Locust make another appearance in Gears of War 3, but not as we remember them. They’re now a nastier strain of evil, flesh-eating buggers, mutated in the form of the Lambent. Oh, and they can shape-shift as well.
The multiplayer will be different to the one we’ve all become used to. It may, perhaps, be more similar to recent Call of Duty games, allowing you to utilize weapon upgrades and perks. We’re not sure yet, but only time will tell. The one thing we are sure about is that, come midnight on the release date, game stores everywhere are going to be teaming with gaming-aficionado’s, freaks, geeks and the down-right weird. Yes people, Gears of War is back alright, and I like it.
