We are coming up close to the next big games convention of the year – Gamescom! The annual event held in Cologne, Germany on 13-17 August is normally a playground for all the games revealed at E3 but this year is a little different and is proving to be one of the most exciting to date. Why you ask? Microsoft and Sony are holding press conferences for the event, and I think it’s here we’ll be in for a treat!
Microsoft have announced that their Xbox briefing will be live streamed through Xbox LIVE, Xbox.com and Xbox Twitch Channel on 12th August at 1PM GMT, and have cheekily teased that we’ll be in for “Big surprises you will not want to miss”. Games on show will include Sunset Overdrive, Halo: Master Chief Edition, Project Spark, Forza Horizon 2 and Assassins Creed: Unity, also we’re hopeful to catch a glimpse of the intriguing Xbox One exclusive title Scalebound that was revealed at E3 2014. Also expect information on the new white Kinect-less Xbox One bundle (announced today!) This includes the before mentioned Sunset Overdrive, would this deal entice you to buy the console if you haven’t already done so? This is a good move in my opinion, especially if they can price the bundle at £350!
So what does Sony have in store for us? They claim this year that “Gamescom as big as E3”, a press conference is being held on 12th August 7PM GMT. You can expect to see big titles like Destiny, Driveclub (that was absent from E3), Uncharted 4, Bloodborne, The Order: 1886 and Infamous: First Light DLC on show. Many fans are also hoping to catch more gameplay of the ever popular Hello Games title No Man’s Sky (recently announced timed exclusive) and news on the new RPG IP that Guerrilla Games have been working on. Moving on from software I fully expect to see more information on Sony’s VR Headset ‘Project Morpheus’, also news on Playstation TV and Playstation Now that’s currently in its public beta phase. Can Sony maintain the momentum from E3?
Rounding off the big 3 is Nintendo that have confirmed they’ll be making an appearance at the event, software on show for the Wii U will include Bayonetta 1 & 2, Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker, Hyrule Warriors, Mario Kart 8, Mario Party 10, Sonic Boom: Rise of Lyrie, Splatoon, Super Smash Bros and Yoshi’s Woolly World. Nintendo’s powerhouse handheld console the 3DS also has various games on show that include Disney Magical World, Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate, Super Smash Bros – 3DS Edition and Sonic Boom: Shattered Crystal, although GAMEFREAK has confirmed that Pokémon Omega Ruby & Alpha Sapphire will NOT be playable – Bad times for the Pokémasters!
So what else can we expect at the event?
Well publisher Deep Silver have confirmed that open world zombie game Dead Island 2 gameplay will be shown for the first time, the title scheduled for a Spring 2015 release has created positive anticipation ever since it was announced at E3 – We’re always up for some Zombie carnage!
Also on show is Metro: Redux – set in post-apocalyptic Russia – the re-mastered title includes the original Metro: 2033 and sequel Metro: Last Light in beautiful 1080p at 60fps (Lovely job!).
What can we expect from EA? Several titles have been confirmed by the publishing giant with FIFA 15, Dragon Age: Inquisition, The Sims 4, Dawngate and Battlefield: Hardline, all of which will be making an appearance. Also in the last few weeks we have been subject to a teaser trailer from Bioware, showing a young man in an Asian café at night that is blown back by an electrical surge with the words ‘Do you know they are watching? Your power is rising’ along with ‘Cologne, Germany -You’ve been chosen – 8.13.14’. Is it coincidence that this is the date of EA’s press conference? I think not! I wonder what’s in store for us!?
It wouldn’t be a Gamescom without a Call of Duty game on the show floor and this year is no different! We will witness the world premiere of the Call of Duty: Advanced warfare multiplayer mode on 11th August 6PM GMT, year after year the series get scrutinised for being stale but the latest instalment looks like a breath of fresh air. Set in future America after a terrorist nuclear take over (no idea how they pulled this one off!) the campaign looks graphically amazing and with Kevin Spacey as the main antagonist Sledgehammer games are hoping for a hit. Are you hyped? Or is the series over in your mind?
What else can we expect?
Mortal Kombat co-creator Ed Boon has also been teasing new information on the latest title of the famous franchise – Mortal Kombat X, further character reveals? Kano is the latest fighter to be hinted for the roster, perhaps we’ll be treated to a couple more names and gameplay? One can hope!
Perhaps you’re waiting for some Metal Gear Solid news? Well you’re in luck! Konami have confirmed a press event where series created Hideo Kojima will hold a Q&A and showcase Metal Gear Solid: The Phantom Pain, in a statement that reads:
“Konami plans to reveal on Mr Kojima’s most ambitious Metal Gear Solid ever. Mr Kojima himself will exclusively present new gameplay of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, which will show the impressive capability of Kojima Productions breath taking FOX engine and more!”
For WWE fans Take-Two interactive is to show a full roster reveal on August 16th plus gameplay, the game has a release date of October 28th and if you pre-order a copy you’ll be able to play as former WCW superstar Sting for the first time in an WWE game – I must say the latest screenshot looks graphically amazing! Along with the return of MyCareer mode for created wrestlers it’s on the right path to be one of the biggest WWE titles to date!
Other big hitters that have been confirmed to be on show include Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn, Alien: Isolation, Diablo III: Reaper of Souls Ultimate Edition, Evolve, Far Cry 4, Little Big Planet 3, Minecraft PS4 & PS Vita Edition, Project Cars, Wow that’s a mouth-watering list of games!
Now although unconfirmed murmurs and rumours around the gaming circles have suggested that other titles like Quantum Break, Planetside 2 – PS4 Edition, Warhammer: Eternal Crusade, Dying Light, The Evil Within, The Witcher III: Wild Hunt could make an appearance, although I wouldn’t bank on it just yet! Perhaps news on the unannounced Bethesda title – Fallout 4 anyone?
This will surely be the biggest Gamescom in recent memory! So what are you most looking forward to the most next week? Do you think there will be any mega ton reveals? We’ll see!
I’ll keep you posted as it comes!
