As we approach September and my fourth attempt at predicting the upcoming additions to the Instant Game Collection one thing is looking pretty clear to me – I’m very good at ‘nearly’ predicting the games each month. I was two months off for Lone Survivor, two months off with Trine 2 and four months off with Proteus. My sole correct prediction so far remains Surge on the Vita (although last month I almost went with Road Not Taken – but after flipping a mental coin went with The Swapper instead).
My history would suggest I should just look back at my previous predictions and reproduce some of them for this month… but that would be pretty dull. So instead I’ll start by looking forward to the games whose release dates happen to coincide with next month’s IGC update – Velocity 2X (PS4, Vita) and Warriors Orochi 3: Ultimate (PS4, PS3, Vita). Warriors Orochi doesn’t really fit the profile, although Velocity 2X certainly does so that goes straight into my predictions.
Four more predictions are required to make up the monthly allocation however, so it’s necessary to apply some restrictions to reduce the many options. Dishonored and Strike Suit Zero have just been introduced on Microsoft’s rival ‘Games with Gold’ system so it’s very unlikely they’ll appear on the Instant Game Collection in the immediate future (and that’s possibly why we’re still yet to see Dead Island on the Sony offerings). Additionally, we can realistically rule out any games released in the past couple of months (The Swapper, Rogue Legacy, Oddworld New ‘N Tasty, Tales of Xillia 2, CounterSpy) as gamers would rightly be pretty miffed if they’d just paid full price for a game that was suddenly being made available for free. And on a similar note, it probably won’t be a game included in the current Summer Sale.
The final step is a bit of guesswork – looking at the games that are still viable and making an educated guess. On the PS4 there isn’t too much to choose from – maybe Escape Plan or Octodad which I’ve been expecting for months (although it’s Metacritic score is slipping below the magical 70% limit). The Vita has a few more options with Tearaway, TxK, OlliOlli, Spelunky, Dustforce and Retro City Rampage looking like possibilities. But once again it’s the PS3 which has all the gleaming possibilities – L.A. Noire, Assassin’s Creed 4, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Max Payne 3, Ni No Kni, Castle of Illusion, Lost Planet 3, Enslaved, Prototype 2, Deathspank, Dustforce, Fat Princess and Warp are just some of the eligible games. However I can only pick two so will have to go with my gut instinct.
So without further ado, my predictions for September 2014 are:
Velocity 2X (cross-buy)
Ni No Kuni
Lost Planet 3
Velocity 2X (cross-buy)
In a few weeks we’ll see if I’ve managed to get any right myself. In the meantime please leave your predictions (no need to sign up) in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
