Predicting the PlayStation Plus ‘free’ games for January 2016

Predicting the PlayStation Plus 'free' games for November 2015

Christmas has come and gone and despite the fact that they’ve probably received games for Christmas anyway, PlayStation gamers are already baying for some big name additions to the Instant Game Collection in January 2016. The clamouring is even louder than normal as Xbox owners will be treated to several notable titles in next month’s Games with Gold service with Killer Instinct, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, Dirt: Showdown and… Zheros (well they can’t all be games you’ve heard of).

As is customary it’s worth checking what games are due to be released on the same day the new IGC titles for January are introduced. This brings up Amplitude (PS4), Hardware: Rivals (PS4) and Volume (Vita) which would all normally seem suitable candidates. However the two former games already have prices announced for when they go live on PSN while Volume will already be free to any Vita owners who have purchased the PS4 version, meaning I can realistically ignore all three of these. Elsewhere though there are a number of other games that suspiciously don’t have release dates yet including Dead Secret (PS4, PS3), Gunscape (PS4), Klaus (PS4) and Broforce (PS4, Vita) which could potentially be used.

For my next step in considering what titles could possibly appear as ‘free’ games to PlayStation owners I’ve taken a cursory glance at what titles are (or have recently been) on sale, with the reasoning that Sony wouldn’t utilise those games. For January this rules out a large number of games and series including The Last of Us, Shadow of Mordor, Watch Dogs, Saints Row 4, LEGO titles, Bastion, Nidhogg, Surgeon Simulator, Trine, Strike Suit Zero, Another World, BADLAND, Skullgirls, The Swindle SteinsGate, Ys: Memories of Celceta, Rayman, Persona 4, Injustice: Gods Amongst Us, Shovel Knight, Danganronpa, Titan Souls, Mad Max, Grand Theft Auto, Tomb Raider, Wolfenstein, Dragon Age Inquisition, Killzone, Infamous, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Tearaway, Transformers: Devastation, Sleeping Dogs, Evolve, Dishonored, Knack, Axiom Verge, South Park: The Stick of Truth, The Evil Within, Hitman, Just Cause, Murdered: Soul Suspect, Crysis 2 and Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

After ruling out a lot of potential games it then makes sense to check for any clues to what games are up for inclusion, but unfortunately there aren’t really any hints. So it seems a good a time as any to just draw up a brief list of likely games and make my choices from those. A list like this perhaps – Terraria (all versions),  Grim Fandango (PS4, Vita), Frozen Synapse Prime (Vita), Quell Memento (Vita), Gunslugs (Vita), Joe Danger 2 (PS3, Vita), Retro City Rampage (cross-buy all), Baboon (Vita), Nihilumbra (Vita), Dustforce (PS3, Vita), Transistor (PS3), Alien: Isolation (PS4, PS3), Shadow Warrior (PS4), Fat Princess (PS3),  Watch Dogs (PS4). And then just a few as my predictions…

PS4 predictions:

Shadow Warrior

Dead Secret (cross-buy)

Retro City Rampage (cross-buy)

Broforce (cross-buy)

PS3 predictions:

Dead Secret (cross-buy)

Retro City Rampage (cross-buy)

Joe Danger 2 (cross-buy)

Vita predictions:

In the next few days we’ll see if I’ve managed to get any right myself.  In the meantime please leave your predictions in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
