Predicting the PlayStation Plus ‘free’ games for April 2016

Predicting the PlayStation Plus 'free' games for November 2015

March 2016 was very much a mixed bag in terms of my monthly PlayStation Plus predictions. I correctly forecast Broforce (but so did a great many people) and had previously nominated Galak-Z – although to be fair that was quite a few months ago. More interesting however was the unusual selection of games that Sony chose to include in the March lineup which included The Last Guy on PS3 (showing games over six old are still possible options) and Reality Fighters which shows the general rule that to be eligible games need to be averaging over 70% doesn’t really apply any more.

Still, onwards to April 2016 and the first thing to note that Dead Star has essentially been confirmed as one of the PS4 games to be made available in this month’s Instant Game Collection which takes care of one of my predictions but still leaves five selections to make.

My first starting point is searching for other games which will be released on 5th April which reveals Enter the Gungeon and Stikbold both for the PS4. Enter the Gungeon has a pre-order price on the PSN store already so can be safely ignored, however dodgeball game Stikbold game doesn’t so seems a reasonable candidate. Moving on to the PS3 and Vita unfortunately doesn’t show any relevant new releases so I’ll quickly move on.

The next order of business is checking which games are or have recently been on sale, with the understanding that Sony wouldn’t make them free so soon afterwards. This month that rules out a vast selection of individual games and franchises including Resident Evil, Transformers, FIFA, PES, Metal Gear Solid, Borderlands, Uncharted, Mass Effect, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Just Cause, Lego, Need for Speed, Grand Theft Auto, Mortal Kombat, Spider-Man, Telltale Games, Street Fighter, inFamous, Star Wars, Elder Scrolls, Devil May Cry, Danganronpa, Batman Arkham series, Dragon Ball, One Piece, Prototype, Battlefield, Tomb Raider, Rainbow Six, Bloodborne, Until Dawn, The Last of Us, Shadow of Mordor, J-Stars, The Order: 1886, Wolfenstein, Divinty: Original Sin, The Evil Within, Terraria, Deadpool, The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, Knack, Killzone, Blood Bowl 2, Journey, Broken Age, Titan Souls, The Talos Principle, Defense Grid 2, LA Noire, Injustice: Gods Among Us, Stein’s Gate, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, God of War: Ascension, Tearaway, Criminal Girls and Dragon Age: Inquisition. Phew!

Following on from this I looked towards Metacritic for inspiration. I checked the top 20 rated games on each system and crossed off games that have already been in the IGC, are on sale or have been released in the last couple of months. This actually ruled out most possibilities and just left me with Flower, Diablo III, Shovel Knight, The Witcher 3 and Bastion on the PS4; Braid on the PS3 and only Persona 4 on the Vita. Not the most inspiring names but it helps me fill a few more slots in my predictions, and then to complete the lineup I’ll include a few games which are long overdue for an appearance.

PS4 predictions:

Dead Star

Shovel Knight (cross-buy)

PS3 predictions:

Shovel Knight (cross-buy)

Vita predictions:

Shovel Knight (cross-buy)

Disgaea 4

In the next few days we’ll see if I’ve managed to get any right myself.  In the meantime please leave your predictions in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
