Considering how popular Dodgeball the film was it’s weird that there hasn’t been many Dodgeball games to play. The game of Dodgeball is a simple one, you have a ball which when in your possession you throw at someone, if they get hit they’re out, if they manage to dodge it or catch in then it’s your turn to run away. Luckily for you budding fans of niche sports we get a chance to play Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure. It’s also rare for a sports game to start off with a story about love but that’s where Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure decides to begin.

Like any good plot it starts of with someone dealing with loss. In Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure Bjorn is in love with a member of rival team i.e. Heidi. As luck would have it Bjorn and Jerome reach the final and play Heidi’s team. Unfortunately when Heidi arrives at the gym she’s kidnapped by the Devil who appears to not be a fan of Dodgeball. Instead of staying to win by default Bjorn and Jerome decide to be heroes and go after the kidnappers. So through a 12 levels over 6 locations you must battle various teams and obstacles to get Heidi back.

The levels are reasonably varied bearing in mind all you have is a ball. There are scenarios where you must hit a minibus with the ball then take on its inhabitants. In other levels you take on an old coach, a giant white shark and ultimately the devil itself. The boss levels add some variety to Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure and requires you to change the way you play. The plot and stages are entertaining to play, the humour is funny throughout it’s just a shame there isn’t that many stages to play.

Also Dodgeball is a very simple game so the constant throwing can become repetitive during a long level. Controlling your teammates is fairly easy although if you play with a CPU partner you will get frustrated with their lack of Dodgeballing ability especially when you’re in the clear and they throw a dismal ball nowhere hear you, it’s easier and better to play with a friend. The CPU player seems to lack the same speed and agility you have which is really annoying when the opposition are down for the count and you’re one hit away from winning and your partner seems to take an awful lot of time to do something.

Graphically Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure has gone down the cartoon route with blocky characters, it works well as it matches the story and dialogue. Musically it’s pretty forgettable but the voice acting is quite funny. It’s a shame there’s no online multiplayer but at least some of that shame is lifted by the excellent local multiplayer. Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure is a game to play amongst friends.

Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure is a fun game to play and the kind of take on a niche sport that other developers should look to make. The mechanics of Dodgeball are very simple and lend itself to being very easy to replicate as a game as demonstrated by Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure. Whether your taking on the adventures of Bjorn & Jerome or playing the highly addictive multiplayer Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure is at its core an entertaining title. It won’t take long for you to be balled over by the sheer joy of hitting someone in the face with a ball. Sure it’s technically or graphically not going to win anything but Stikbold! A Dodgeball Adventure is definitely one to add to the party collection.
