Predicting the PlayStation Plus ‘free’ games for June 2016

Predicting the PlayStation Plus 'free' games for November 2015

After a few months of semi-successful predictions I unfortunately drew a blank in May 2016 as many of the games had been off my radar. My task looks to be slightly easier this month as the two PS4 titles have apparently been uncovered in the source code of a Sony email. NBA 2K16 and Gone Home would represent a significant upturn in the quality of the monthly additions to the Instant Game Collection available to PlayStation Plus subscribers – so how feasible are they?

Well given E3 is imminent I’d expect Sony to bring out some big guns so it does make sense – particularly as the rival Games with Gold service on the Xbox has already announced some quality additions of their own next month. Plus there is some precedence for this as NBA 2K14 was added to the IGC catalogue in June 2014 so I’m fairly confident in backing these two games to be the PS4 offerings for next month.

However it’s still worth checking out other options – even if there aren’t many evidently obvious. Aside from Paranautical Activity being released on 1st June (the date when the IGC gets refreshed) there’s nothing that overtly stands out, yet Paranautical Activity is still one worth considering.

Aside from that it’s customary for me to check out recent sales to rule out certain titles, as it would certainly unlikely for a sale title to then be made available for free. This allows me to discard a number of games and franchises from my predictions including Grand Theft Auto, The Witcher, Mortal Kombat, Divinity, Tomb Raider, The Evil Within, The Talos Principle, Deadpool, LEGO, Infamous, Lords of the Fallen, Max Payne 3, Lord of the Rings, Prototype, LA Noire, Red Dead Redemption, Titan Souls, Dragon’s Souls, Bastion and Fat Princess.

My final step this month was to check back on the last three month’s worth of PS3 additions to see if there was any discernible pattern, and while the years are pretty varied the metacritic averages tend to be between 63% and 84%. Based on this I’ve hypothesised that Stuntman Ignition, Tokyo Jungle and The Bureau: XCOM Declassified are all worth a punt.
