Predicting the PlayStation Plus ‘free’ games for September 2016

Predicting the PlayStation Plus 'free' games for November 2015

My August 2016 article saw a return of a single correct prediction with Yakuza 5, but the month was more notable for seemingly introducing a change of policy from Sony regarding the Instant Game Collection as Retro/Grade made its second appearance. However they later clarified this was unintended, and Tom Clancy’s EndWar was later added as a bonus title as compensation. Which means it’s business as usual for this month’s predictions as I try to narrow down potential games that haven’t been a free title on PS Plus before, are more than a few months old (or are released on the day the IGC titles are due to update), are not currently in a promotional sale and are averaging above 70% at

My first port of call is to check out Sony’s impressive Summer sale which immediately takes a number of likely looking candidates out of the running. Those that would otherwise have been worthy of consideration include the Witcher 3, Uncharted 4, Grand Theft Auto V, Battlefield, Rainbow Six, Batman: Arkham series, Need for Speed, Borderlands, Mortal Kombat, Just Cause, Project CARS, The Crew, Star Wars: Battlefront, Dragon Age: Inquisition, Beyond: Two Souls, Heavy Rain, Sniper Elite 3, Payday 2, Plants vs Zombies 2, Trials Fusion, The Evil Within, Doom, LEGO Avengers, MLB 16, Trials Fusion, The Walking Dead, NHL 16, Divinity: Original Sin, Darksiders 2, LEGO Jurassic World, Resident Evil 5, Game of Thrones, Battleborn, Murdered: Soul Suspect, Homefront, Back to the Future, Republique, Umbrella Corps, Arcania, Far Cry, Mass Effect, XCOM Enemy Within, Bioshock, Crysis, Dead Island, LA Noire, Max Payne 3, Mickey Mouse Castle of Illusion, Tales of Monkey Island, LEGO Harry Potter, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Child of Light, Assassin’s Creed, Sam & Max, The Legend of Korra, The Darkness 2, God of War: Ascension, Corpse Party, Severed, Spy Hunter, Civilization Revolution 2, BigFest and Space Hulk.

Following on from this I’ve reviewed the games due for release on September 6th to consider whether any of them would be likely. These consist of DOGOS (PS4), The Tomorrow Children (PS4), AER: Above the Clouds (PS4), Space Overlords (PS4/PS3/Vita) and Lichtspeer (PS4/Vita). These all seem quite likely except for The Tomorrow Children, although the similarity of DOGOS and Space Overlords means I’ll only select one for this month.

To round off my list I’ve looked back at the games that seem well overdue on the IGC service such as Enslaved: Odyssey to the West, South Park: The Stick of Truth, Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch, DeathSpank and Alien: Isolation. All of these would be warmly welcomed by PlayStation Plus subscribers… well maybe not DeathSpank, so I’ll put that in the list.

PS4 predictions:

Space Overlords (cross-buy)

AER: Above the Clouds

Lichtspeer (cross-buy)

PS3 predictions:

Space Overlords (cross-buy)

Ni No Kuni: Wrath of the White Witch

Vita predictions:

Space Overlords (cross-buy)

Lichtspeer (cross-buy)

In the next few days we’ll see if I’ve managed to get any right myself.  In the meantime please leave your predictions in the comments section at the bottom of the page.
