Dota 2 Short Film Contest

Ti7 is underway and the group stages have come to an end. Pre-tournament favourites and reigning champions Evil Geniuses have had a somewhat lackluster start by their standards and the tournament is wide open heading into the main event. However, the Internationals do not only showcase intense Dota 2 encounters; they also highlight other events such as cosplay and short film contests. Chosen from different genres of suspense, comedy, romance and action; artists with a soft spot for the online fantasy game have been submitting entries that could rival the animations of Pixar. So without further ado, here are our top picks from the Ti7 short film contest.

What does a Hero Truly Fear?

This entry was submitted by the reigning TI short film contest winner and was one of the first entries to be submitted. The short film titled ‘What Does a Hero Truly Fear’ has a mixture of comedy, a unique storyline and a huge attention to detail all within a space of just 90 seconds. If you are aware of misplays in Dota 2, this film is sure to tickle your funny bone.

The Masked Warrior

This entry is one of only a few that is 100% not animated. The Masked Warrior is a live action film, set during the ancient time. The story revolves around a man who is ambushed by bandits whilst he is walking on a journey with an old man. The encounter helped Juggernaut unleash his inner abilities and, with the help of the mask, vanquish his enemies. This short film wouldn’t look out of place in a Hollywood blockbuster and is truly unique in character. The foreign language, the costumes and the backdrop all make for a remarkable entry.

Dr. Zeuss in: Oh the People You’ll Meet

My personal favourite, this entry is a comedic look at all the types of player who play the game. From ‘the one guy who says he will only pick Chen’ to ‘the rager, the ringer, the “well-played” spam pinger.’ ‘Dr. Zeuss’ is a well thought out production that is prized on its funniness. The animation is almost as perfect as the voice over narration. A great entry.

Alternative Tactic

A well thought out and animated short film, ‘Alternative Tactic’ does a perfect job of portraying the nature of Dota 2 with its ending sequence – the first team who blows up the enemy’s ancient is always the winner, regardless of anything else that happened during the match. The film revolves around the characters Squee, Spleen and Spoon’s life in the game as one of the most hated heroes. Watch out for the ‘Alternative Tactic’ that decides the outcome of the game.

Ability Madness

At the end of our list comes ‘Ability Madness’. This short portrays a mash up of abilities, characters, edginess and surprise. The films story is as impressive as it looks, it focuses on heroes’ nightmares and of course the many misplays in the game.
