Although summer seems to have ended just yesterday, the fact remains: the winter holidays are coming. For a true gamer, this period of the year means not only more free time to spend with their favorite video game franchises but new titles to be added to their collection. This year was great for gamers, with many important titles released. And there are still quite a few titles set to be released in time for the Christmas shopping craze.
Wolfenstein: The New Colossus (PC, Xbox One, PS4 – October 27)
Nothing beats shooting robo-Hitler to pieces with a chaingun – at least for some, this was the best part of the first FPS Wolfenstein game. Video game graphics have evolved a great deal since then, though, and the approach to the story also changed. When it was rebooted in 2014 with The New Order, the Wolfenstein franchise was far more serious and far better-looking – even in the parts where it’s tipping hats to the 1992 version.
The New Order was followed by a prequel, Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, a year later, loosely based on the 2001 release “Return to Castle Wolfenstein”. But nobody expected things to stop here – and a new adventure follows this year.
Set in an alternate 1961, in the United States occupied by the Nazis, the game will reunite the player with everyone’s favorite William “B.J.” Blazkowicz’ in his quest to help the militant Resistance set up the Second American Revolution and rid the country of the Nazi regime.
Call of Duty: WWII (PC, Xbox One, PS4 – November 3)
After a lot of modern warfare, black ops, and futuristic battle tech, the Call of Duty franchise finally returns to its roots with a story set in World War II (for the first time in almost a decade, by the way). The game will focus on the actions of a 12-man squad of the 1st Infantry Division from 1944 to 1945 in the European theater of conflict and will take its players through the occupied France and Belgium, across the Rhine river valley, and into the heart of Germany. The game will have a Zombies storyline, too – this part will be set in an alternate timeline, where the Nazis successfully discovered necromancy.
Star Wars Battlefront II (PS4, Xbox One, PC – November 17)
Prepare yourself for the upcoming Star Wars sequel by diving into the galaxy far-far away in the upcoming Star Wars: Battlefront II. I’m not sure whether we can call it a “sequel” – it would be better to call it a “proper” Star Wars game, this time with a story-driven single player campaign along with the multiplayer combat. Players will have the chance to join Iden Versio in a series of events leading up to the story of The Force Awakens. For more details, you can read the tie-in novel “Star Wars Battlefront II: Inferno Squad”, released this July as a direct prelude to the game.
The list of playable characters in the game will cover all Star Wars eras – players will be able to choose Luke Skywalker, Boba Fett, Kylo Ren, and Captain Phasma, too.
