Avoiding Fortnite Scams

Anyone who is an avid gamer has heard of the screaming success Fortnite: Battle Royale has had in the past 2 years. While revenue has skyrocketed due to the 200 million users, others have learned to take advantage of the fad by appealing to the crazed gamers.

Thanks to Fortnite, video game streamers have found massive growth in both subscribers and revenue. Ninja is the most well known and one of the most successful game streamers today, but many others have also reaped great benefits from gamers looking to learn how to become a better player. Streamers have taken this one step farther and have now offered one-on-one coaching for a monetary fee.

Not everyone has chosen to take advantage of Fortnite fans in such an honest way, however. A simple search on Youtube will reveal millions of videos whose sole purpose is to lead you to a site where they claim to offer free Vinder Bucks (V-Bucks). These V-Bucks allow you to make cosmetic changes to your character, which seems to be quite popular.

What are these sites? They could either be a site that leads you from one page to the next in order to boost revenue from viewed ads, sending you on a never ending witch hunt, or a site that gets you to click on links in order to infect your device with dangerous malwarethat compromises your data. The sites may even be accomplishing both. Either way, these sites are not something you want to be involved with.

It’s important to note that there is no other place to get V-Bucks than within the game itself. Scammers playing the game have been known to entice fellow teammates to visit these sites or hand over login credentials in order to obtain free V-Bucks, that are otherwise only available through many hours of gameplay. This sounds appealing to those who are unwilling to spend any money on these character upgrades.

Fortnite: Battle Royale has been such a success due to its social gaming atmosphere as many MMORPG’s (massive multiplayer online role playing game) have. Whenever you have a large group of anonymous players, you are faced with an opportunity for many to be taken advantage of. Add in the obsessive nature of the players, and you have a perfect scenario for scammers. Be aware and enjoy the game, but never go to a site in hopes of obtaining V-Bucks, and you will be far less likely to fall victim to a Fortnite thief.
