The 5 Biggest Casino Jackpot Winners

It’s hard enough leaving a casino with as much money as when you walked in, let alone as a freshly-made multi-millionaire. But sometimes miracles do happen. As it’s Christmas – a time for miracles – we’ve teamed up with the guys from bgo.com this December, to count down the 5 biggest casino jackpot winners of all time.

# 5: The Lucky Insomniac

A 20-year-old student from Norway was having trouble sleeping in September 2011, when he decided to have a few late-night spins of NetEnt’s online Mega Fortune slot. It turned out to be far more rewarding than counting sheep. The insomniac struck a €11,736,228 jackpot.

It’s safe to say there was no hope of any shut eye after that. ‘It was just impossible to sleep,” he told the press. ‘I was shaking and sweating. I [had to] try and calm down before even thinking of what to do with the money!’

# 4: The Online Record Breaker

One evening in October 2015, a British soldier from Cheshire decided to sign up to an online casino. Just 25 minutes later, thanks to a 25p spin on the popular Mega Moolah slot, the 26-year-old found himself £13.2 million richer.

The windfall, which broke the world record for the highest online jackpot payout, was a miracle for the soldier and his family. As well as a flash new set of wheels, he vowed to spend the money on the best medical care for his father, who was on a waiting list for a heart and lung transplant.

# 3: The Megabucks History Maker

In 1998, after accidentally staking $300 (rather than $100), a 67-year-old retired flight attendant took home $27,580,879.60 from a Megabucks slot machine at the Palace Casino in Las Vegas.

It marked the first time in history the Megabucks progressive jackpot had surpassed the $20 million mark. But, unbelievably, the big win was not the first for the lucky retiree. A few years earlier, she had struck a $680,000 jackpot on a Wheel of Fortune machine at the exact same casino.

# 2: The Twice-Lucky OAP

In 1989, a 76-year-old World War II veteran turned up for the opening of the Mirage casino in Las Vegas. He quickly blew his $100 budget on the slots. Luckily, his wife loaned him an extra $20 bill, which he somehow managed to turn into $4.6 million on a Megabucks machine.

That impressive jackpot would have been more than enough for the couple to see out their golden years in comfort. However, 16 years later, at the grand old age of 92, the OAP returned to Vegas to chance the slots once again. This time he struck an eye-watering $21.1 million jackpot, most of which he donated to the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

# 1: The Basketball Fan

In March 2003, a 25-year-old software engineer from Los Angeles was in Vegas to support his favourite basketball team. With some time to kill before the big game, he stepped inside the Excalibur Casino, where he won an incredible $39,713,982.25 jackpot.

The win, which came from a Megabucks slot machine, is still the highest ever recorded on the strip. Wisely, the winner opted to remain anonymous, and receive his prize in annual instalments of $1.5 million for the next 25 years.
