A Rough Guide to CS:GO

A Rough Guide to CS:GO

Counter-Strike Global Offensive, more often referred to as CS:GO, is a multiplier first-person shooter which has taken the world by storm. It’s available to play on Xbox 360, Playstation 3, Windows OS X as well as Linux.

The fourth release in the Counter-Striker series, Global Offensiveis a competitive game which puts two teams playing against each other. Whilst it was first released in 2012, it gained worldwide appeal when it became free to play in December 2018.

CS:GO Esports – The Mission

As fans who watch esports would know, the game features two teams; the terrorists and the counter-terrorists. Each team has a mission to accomplish, and, naturally, the opposing team will do everything in its power to stop it.

Depending on the game modes, these missions vary. For example, the terrorists might need to plant a bomb or guard hostages. The counter-terrorists, on the other hand, would need to defuse the bomb or rescue the hostages.

The action-packed game is thrilling for the players and has created a worldwide fanbase which enjoys watching such esports live and placing cs:go bets. In order to encourage a greater number of players, Hidden Path Entertainment – the game’s developers – introduced a matchmaking mechanism.

Individual players who want to play CS:GO, but do not have friends to form a team can allow the system to automatically match them with others.

Following every mission, players are rewarded based on their individual performance during the game. Rewards take the form of currency, which players can use to spend on weapons or other upgrades in preparation of the next mission.

Naturally, members of the winning team win higher prizes than those of the losing team. There are also bonuses for enemies killed and penalties for any teammate killed.

Weapons’ fans love the arsenal which is available to them as they progress through the game. Popular rifles, SMGs and heavy pistols all become available as the player gets higher and higher rewards.

So too are smoke grenades, flashbangs, hand grenades and even a Molotov cocktail. Each weapon and utility have their own features and limitations, so it’s up to each player to choose the equipment which best suits his or her gameplay and preferences.

Unlike most similar multiplayer first-person shooter games, CS:GO does not allow the respawning of a player once he or she is killed off. This means that players need to be much more careful and stealthier during the game, increasing the thrill of playing or watching it.

CS:GO modes

CS:GO matches can have one of eight different modes. Some, like the Flying Scoutsman and Weapons Course, are offline single player modes intended to train a new player. The Casual and Deathmatch modes are online modes pitting two teams against each other, with some safety mechanisms.

In these modes, for example, it is not possible to kill a teammate. In the Arms Race mode, players race to upgrade their weapons as they kill-off more and more enemies. Similarly, in Demolition mode, players can activate and defuse bombs. Players also diffuse bombs in Wingman mode, although they do this in very low gravity.

The eight mode, Competitive, is the one which really brings in the fans who watch esports by the thousands. Each game lasts for 45 minutes, with every minute as intense and exciting as the last. This mode is also the most common one used for CS:GO bets as it offers the most unpredictable outcome and potential for last-minute surprises.

To make the game as fair as possible, players playing in Competitive mode are pitted against other players with the same skill level. The developers have also created Prime Matchmaking which greatly reduces the risk of smurfs. Smurfs are known in the online gaming world as experienced players who create a new account in order to face much less experienced players.
