Greetings, fellow PlayStation fans! I’m Krzysztof, a programmer and designer from the 4-person team that made Die for Valhalla! In a small team you get to wear a lot of hats and I love it.
Die for Valhalla! is an action RPG where you play a Valkyrie, a supernatural maiden bestowed with the ability to possess fallen warriors, monsters and other things to help Vikings save their realm.
Throughout the game you will meet various enemies and while it starts pretty “vanilla” with fighting against marauding dwarves that invaded the Norse lands…
…you will quickly learn that the tale at hand is more weird than just another invasion.
As you travel through Die for Valhalla! you will meet eerie Lovecraftian creatures in their natural habitats.
You start as a novice Valkyrie and as soon as you meet a new mysterious friend you set out to save the world. What could possibly go wrong?
Two games were major inspirations for us and we like to think of them as genre-defining beat ’em ups. Depending on your age, you will probably have fond memories of one or the other (if not both!).
Golden Axe: We love it for its tight design. From combination strikes and leaping assaults, through dashing bull charges, all the way up to ultimate attacks. We have put our own spin on all of those abilities, presenting them anew in a fresh, responsive manner.
Castle Crashers: This game reintroduced beat ’em ups to a wide audience. Its execution and graphical variety are something we strive for in Die for Valhalla! Another great part was the humour and Die for Valhalla! will definitely try to break the fourth wall and who knows, maybe even make you laugh with its jokes.
One thing that is very different about Die for Valhalla! is the possession mechanic. As a Valkyrie you take control of the things at the battlefield and whenever that thing dies (for Valhalla, of course) you are back to the vulnerable spirit form. You can turn into a barrel for that quick, explosive burst of damage or go for a support role while being a bush and healing your friends. In dire situations you can always summon or take control of another Viking to fit your playstyle and the encounter at hand.
From the get go you can possess Vikings and also elements of scenery. Moreover, if you choose certain skills when leveling up, you will also be able to control enemies. To give you an example this can be a great tactic in co-op against the elusive Glory Thief as with smart movement you will be able to give your friends more time to defeat it.
You begin the game with access to one Viking clan and three character classes. However, as you progress through the game, you will unlock new classes and clans, each of them with their unique abilities and advantages.
Another thing we are extremely happy about is the music in Die for Valhalla! We have 13 beautiful tracks that will dynamically match the on-screen action.
It was composed by award-winning young talent Paweł Górniak (2017 Young Talent Award at FMF Kraków and The Mark Award for The Best Folk Track in 2016) and you will be able to listen to it in the Themes that we’ve made for PS4 as well (we made two themes and one of them will be available for free!).
